The Reigate Kitchen, Walk-In Pantry, Oak Larder & Bar

“We had the initial consultation where we talked thorough what we liked/didn't like, things we were looking for and immediately got on really well with David, we loved his enthusiasm and the ideas that he brought to the conversation. After seeing the first designs, we were very quick to decide that Herringbone were the kitchen company for us and the rest of the process was extremely enjoyable and pain free.”

We are thrilled that this project was shortlisted in the 2023 International Design & Architecture Awards for kitchen of the year! We worked with architect Barnes Design on this project.

The Design

This design includes a large kitchen, walk-in pantry, bar and breakfast area. The clients are a young family of 4 and needed more space for their growing children. They built out an extension to incorporate the walk-in kitchen, dining and bar area. The Lacanche cooker is one of their bigger sizes at 1500 and was always meant to be a focal point. We created a false chimney above with decorative pelmet and a break front within the cabinetry, to allow for a marble shelf behind the cooker for oils and spices. The range sits centre of the room, with the bar and wine area on the left and fridge freezer to the right to create balance.

The kitchen is designed in our Westgate Style and is painted in a lovely Container Green colour from Herringbone Paints, which when the light changes makes the atmosphere and hues change too.

“I think there were certain areas we were really set on before we started, and the layout of the room dictated a number of things. While we both had a vision of what we wanted, I think the final kitchen has probably surpassed that! We were so impressed with the professionalism and way the process was handled.”

The Details: Colours, Hardware, Worktops Etc

The kitchen is designed to be a social space for entertainment and functional on a day-to-day basis while still feeling homely and cosy any time of the day or year. The worktop and splashback throughout the kitchen is a 20mm thick Arabescato Marble with a polished finish, which in itself is a piece of art. The clients chose a beautiful burnished brass handle from Armac Martin.

“We wanted a space to entertain in, where we could host all our friends and family that would have the space and the facilities to do that. We already had a big room, but how we used the space and made it feel homely and welcoming was what we needed Herringbone to help with.”

“Choosing colours wasn't the easiest, as we went through a few options. We knew we wanted a dark colour, but we also had to consider how the colour would complement the adjoining lounge and boot room. We also knew we wanted the larder to have a contrasting/fun colour. We were very pleased with the combination we ended up with.”

The Walk-In Pantry

The sky light makes it feel light and airy and the Coop Pink cabinet colour from Herringbone Paints is the perfect contrast to the dark kitchen.

The walk-in pantry is probably our favourite bit, the colour contrast to the rest of the kitchen is great, the style and layout is just perfect, we get so much use out of it, and the ladder is such a talking point, as well as being really really useful to reach the high shelves, meaning we're making full use of the space that's in there.”

The Stained Oak Larder

“We also love the pantry cupboards, we discussed with David whether to paint it a different colour, or how we could make it feel like a piece of standalone furniture - we were both pleased when we settled on the natural wood finish, but I don't think either of us expected it to be the beautiful work of art that it is. The way they've used the grain of wood as a feature is just stunning, and it's definitely a highlight of the room.”

The Bar

The client’s wanted space for a bar area within the kitchen. David designed a bar area at the far end of the kitchen for this, with a large wine fridge placed next too the mirrored bar cabinetry.

On Using Herringbone

“All of the reasons above are why we wanted a bespoke kitchen. We knew we wanted something that was built to last, that will grow with us as our family does in this home and that would also be able to fit the scale of the room. An off the shelf solution simple wouldn't have done that.“

We wish the client a lifetime of fun and happiness in their beautiful home. This gorgeous Kitchen has featured in The English Home, Time & leisure etc.
