The Highgate Project
The Design
Our lovely Highgate clients chose to undertake a beautifully considered double-storey extension, designed to create a more seamless flow between the house and garden. The new layout transformed the downstairs into a light-filled, connected family space, while upstairs it allowed for the addition of a stunning master suite complete with an en-suite bathroom.
“We wanted to open the connect with the garden, to allow the kids and us to be able to seamless transition between the two (when the weather permits).” From the outset, the clients wanted a space that would feel open, welcoming and perfectly suited to both everyday life and entertaining. However, achieving the right balance within the room required careful consideration, which they worked closely with their Designer David on.
“The extension has changed how we live. The open plan Living Room / Kitchen / Dining Room is the room we spend all our time in. It has become the heart of the house given both its size and new layout. We chose Herringbone for its aesthetic style, ability to achieve exactly what we wanted, small family business and quality of craftsmanship. “
Although every renovation comes with its compromises. One of the most challenging decisions were considering losing a spare bedroom to achieve their ‘master bedroom dream’ (they stole a bedroom to create their large master bathroom and walk in wardrobe.
Another tricky design was just all the interior design choices in a project this size. Luckily, our Interior Designer Martyna was able to help with the kitchen and utility choices.
“We aren’t always the most brave - so we needed to push ourselves and the colour of the Herringbone Kitchen was one of those - and we are so glad we did!”
One of their favourite things about the new design is how open plan living makes spending time together.
“Being able to entertain friends or family in the new space. The combination of the indoor space, framed by the kitchen and its bright colours, the more demure dining area and the light from outside makes it perfect. The British weather has already allowed us host a few brunches / BBQs and it’s lovely to have friends with kids over to play in the enlarged space.”
Now complete, the kitchen has become the heart of the home, a space designed for gathering, cooking and spending time together. The island naturally draws people in, offering a relaxed place to sit, work, chat and cook together.
Utility
We were lucky enough to get to work on the utility in this home as well. The clients have excellent design style and we made sure this style was reflected in a seamless flow across the space. One of the most important parts of any utility is room for drying and worktop space for folding, and this design captures that perfectly.
The Details: Colours, Handles & Bespoke Details
The client chose a bespoke paint colour for the cabinetry in the project, from a beautiful soft green through to a warm earthy tone, the oak stain is a chocolate, which flows perfectly together. The kitchen is designed in our Westgate range. The handles are beautiful in Burnished Brass from Armac Martin. We used a beautiful Dekton REM worktop, in a velvet finish in the kitchen and Miele and F&P appliances.
“It's just a lovely place to be, it functions well and looks beautiful.”
The renovation has fundamentally changed how the clients use their home. What was once a house in need of transformation has become a warm, inviting environment where entertaining and socialising now sit at the centre of everyday life.
We loved working on this beautiful project together with the family and wish them a lifetime of happiness in their new home.
