The Hampton Project
The Design
This gorgeous open plan kitchen was completed for a lovely family near Hampton back in 2023. The family had bought the house back in 2015 and knew that the kitchen was something they would hope to do in the future. The previous owners had done an extension, but not fully and our clients saw how big the space could be with a better vision. The lovely clients got in touch with us and we began working together back in 2019. Excitedly after several rounds of IVF, the clients fell pregnant! This put a wonderful delay to the project and we got to rethink the design with a little one in mind.
“They were also incredibly patient. What started out with us creating designs with Will in 2019, with quite a bit of back and forth in terms of configuration, then having Lucy take up the mantel in 2022, it never felt like they got frustrated with us and the time it took. They were patient and welcoming and very understanding. Life happens and it felt like Herringbone and the team really understood that. If we do ever move in the future, I know I will be saving our pennies for another Herringbone kitchen and more.”
The bespoke cabinetry was designed in our Westminster style cabinetry, which works beautifully in this modern open family kitchen. In terms of the design, we looked at whether to have an island or a peninsula, to block of the kitchen door and incorporate the dining room into the kitchen space. In the end the island was chosen, which is the perfect decision for a growing family. The client was also originally hesitant to put the sink on the island, but now says they wouldn’t have it any other way, it works perfectly in the space. In fact, in the end the clients was surprised by just how much space they have.
“I love the space, it feels modern but also traditional. It feels like a family kitchen, yet is great for entertaining and when friends and family come over it is a real wow space. I absolutely adore the larder, definitely a larder of dreams. I love the island, and how it feels big but also doesn’t take up all the space.”
“Following Herringbone on Instagram, it wasn’t only the beautiful kitchens they created that appealed, it was the family ethos that they had. I love that their team are employees, that everything is made in the UK, the quality of the material and how it is put together feels incredibly rich and long lasting. Their ethos around sustainability and giving back to the community all made spending a bit more on a kitchen feel justified. This is a forever kitchen, even if this doesn't end up being our forever house. The kitchen is built to last.”
The Details: Colours, Handles & Bespoke Details
The blue cabinetry is a bespoke colour made for our clients, which goes perfectly with the pink island. The large bifold doors allow for natural light to come through and as the light changes throughout the day.
“ I love the colour, which had always been my want from the very beginning, but I also love how through seeing other Herringbone projects take shape I was able to feel confident, pretty last minute, to change the colour of the island.”
Family Life
How a space functions day to day is so important, so we are very happy to hear that it works perfectly for their young family. The family use to have two doors into the kitchen/dining space and when their son was very small he used to love doing a loop around the kitchen through these doors. Our client was worried that blocking off one of the doors (to create a playroom/snug) would mean their son would miss this game. But luckily the island has given him a new loop to run around!
“I love our kitchen. We barely spend any time in the living room anymore. I love that I can work, cook, wash, play and entertain all in the same space. I can watch my son while he plays, either in the garden or in his playroom. We had a 4yr old birthday party here, and with the doors open to the garden, just had one huge space that didn’t feel too hectic with all the little ones. It has a very relaxed, family vibe with pockets of fun. I also love how much storage there is. We don't use it all, which is great if our family grows or for bigger events or life changes. “
