What Is A Bespoke Kitchen?

Bespoke kitchen and furniture design is what it says on the tin - everything, and we mean absolutely everything, is bespoke and tailor made for you fitting with your space, needs and personality. Not only is the design and bespoke cabinetry style of kitchen created for you but it’s the custom features like handles, taps, worktops etc. that you pick yourself with our designers that pull it all together. When you open the cabinets, drawers or doors you see all the bespoke features and storage options that make everything unique - think peg drawers, plugs in the right places, different height shelving, ladders to reach up high, chopping board storage and much much more.

The Process is Bespoke

What’s more is the process, which is also bespoke. Our master craftspeople make each piece of furniture using traditional techniques and modern machinery in our workshop in Canterbury. Our skilled joiners are fully employed members of the team (which is unique in the industry) and work with you throughout the fit, to make the project as seamless as possible.

The Materials are Sustainable and Long Lasting

In addition we believe the ingredient to long lasting kitchens is using considered materials that have been well cared for. Every material used in your kitchen cabinet is from companies with strong sustainability records. In that way, we know that our kitchens are not just valued by our customers but are good for the earth and future generations. Our timbers are sourced from well managed, responsible forests where the cycle of clearing and replanting has been continuous for many generations.

We only use temperate hard and soft woods and avoid endangered tropical timbers where logging practices are generally less well controlled and regulated. We use indigenous British species wherever possible and we plant a tree for every kitchen made. For each bespoke kitchen we make we dedicate a tree to the National Forest, a regeneration project across 200 square miles in the Midlands.

The Colours are Bespoke to You

All of your colours are also bespoke and you can choose from a large range of paints from our Herringbone Paints range however, we also customise and colour match for you if you are super set on one particular colour. We made a conscious decision to only use water-based low VOC paint, which is very rare in this industry. While it was not the easy option, we felt true to our ethos. We have worked tirelessly to come up with a method that makes using water-based paint both practical for the kitchen and eco-friendly.

Everything you get from the process, service and design to the finished kitchen, storage and custom features are unique to you. Read more on pricing for our bespoke kitchens here and if you’d like to talk to us about how you can start designing your dream kitchens book a consultation here.

Marble: Bespoke Kitchens & Furniture

Marble is simply beautiful and nothing compares to the beauty of a real marble worktop. It is the ultimate bespoke worktop due to no marble slab ever being the same.

It can be a little less practical than other options like quartz, dekton, porcelain, granite or hardwood due to it being prone to scratches and stains. It will develop a patina over time, giving it a vintage look and for some people this is the appeal of choosing marble.

Each slab is completely unique and it is possible to choose your own piece. Here are a few examples of marble being used as worktops in the kitchen, pantries, bathrooms, dressers, wardrobes and tables.

Modern Farmhouse Kitchens

We love a farmhouse or country kitchen design at Herringbone. This is partly because of the challenges it offers with all the uneven nooks and crannies that our bespoke kitchens need to fit into but also because new design concepts are constantly emerging from this old favourite.

The modern farmhouse kitchen sees open plan living and open plan kitchens as being the heart of the home. The warmth of the wooden beams often surrounding the spaces are a real lovely touch and it makes the kitchen come to life. Here are a few tips on how to bring your farmhouse kitchen into a modern era, have fun with the design and add a touch of your personality.

For storage try to include a breakfast bar/unit rather than larders only, it adds another layer of coolness and they look incredible

  • Standard practice for a farmhouse kitchen would include a range/aga. The new contemporary version of this would be electric, and the Everhot adds a great solution to this OR replace that system with built in ovens and induction hobs

  • Add softness through shelving, this is where to introduce timber in my opinion. It gives warm notes to the kitchen and a lovely bit of character too

  • Belfast sink would be standard but could be replaced with Undermount for a cleaner look. Many clients love to also go for a "prep sink" too

  • Move away from the sage/pastel greens, look at soft colours with hints of the pink palette and mix with exposed timber doors. Either stained or bleached.

  • Move away from timber worktops, look at the natural stones or Quartz for simple maintenance. Keep it light, maybe switch up the stone on the island to bring in more texture and colour.
