Meet the Herringbone Team: James Colvin

Continuing our series of introducing the members of the Herringbone family, we have our favourite shop assistant, James Colvin, up next!

Hi! Give us a quick introduction; who are you?

Hi, I'm James! I study History at the University of Kent, and work in the shop a couple of times a week - chances are, if you pop in, it'll be my friendly face saying hello!

Tell us about your career!

I've been with Herringbone for about a year, part time during my studies at the university. I've really enjoyed my time - I'm fairly certain 'kitchen salesman' might top the list of odd student jobs! Otherwise, I work at a bar in Canterbury - anything to keep me from actual studying!

What is it you do at Herringbone?

I look after the shop a couple of times a week so Will has a little more time with Fred - if you pop in, I'll be writing a blog, tidying the shop, or talking to customers. I may well be your first point of contact in you getting your new kitchen!

What about design drives you?

While I don't work on the kitchens themselves, I love that I get to look at the photos and testimonies from customers, who all love their new space. Writing the blog week to week is great, as I still get to appreciate all the lovely new kitchens!

What project are you most proud of in your time with Herringbone?

The most rewarding part is definitely helping talk to a customer on their first visit, recommending certain units or styles, and then seeing them later, after completition, and seeing how ecstatic they are with their new kitchen!

Why should people go with Herringbone?

No other place offers the same level of commitment to customers - we like to make sure every decision in your kitchen is made with you, which ensures the new kitchen is totally your own.

What about you would people be surprised by?

I sing in 2 choirs at the university, have sung for 5 years, and played piano for 10 - athough, you might not be too surprised if you've ever walked into the shop, as I am quite often found singing along to music (most probably Toto's Africa!)

Meet the Herringbone Team: William Durrant

With Herringbone Kitchens having recently celebrated it's 2nd Anniversary (yay!), we thought it would be a perfect time to meet and introduce our team to the site, and who better to start with than our Director and Designer, William Durrant!

Hi! Give us a quick introduction; who are you?

Hi, my name is William Durrant. I live in Canterbury and have a one year old son, named Freddie, who keeps me on my toes.

Tell us about your career!

I have been working in the Kitchen industry for almost a decade. I started working for a much larger company and have also worked for another independent showroom. I learned a lot about design, project management and the kitchen industry in my first few roles. However, I wanted to branch out and be in the position to design my own kitchen ranges and manage all aspects of the project. I am lucky to have the opportunity to own my own company and very lucky in having the best team around me.

What is it you do at Herringbone?

I am the Designer as well as the Director.

What about design drives you?

I love a project and love when there are particularly challenging elements to the design. It is especially fun when clients are brave in wanting to try new materials.

What project are you most proud of in your time with Herringbone?

I’m proud of every project, they are all very important to me.

Why should people go with Herringbone?

We are a small independent company that relies on perfection, great design and customer satisfaction. Our team is up for anything, often times are clients come to us with ideas that we have not seen done before. We love sourcing new materials and finding creative ways to make kitchens that truly stand out.

What about you would people be surprised by?

I am a bit of a DIYer. I plumbed, rewired and plastered my entire house. As you can see, the transformation from an old student house is quite something!

Canterbury - Where, What and When

Whilst the rain threatens to pop up every now and then, the beautiful sunshine does inspire summer activites. As we head towards August and the summer holidays, there is no better time to visit Canterbury, and enjoy its rustic streets and everything it has to offer. This week, we'd like to highlight a couple of interesting things to do in Canterbury, whether you're visiting or live in the area.

Food is a highlight Canterbury has endless contributions to. There are so many great local restaurants, and you can definitely get a feel for the community Canterbury holds through its cuisine. Pork & Co., run locally, now hold 3 locations, with a Shop, Bar and Eatery, and a small deli sandwich shop called Little Joe's Deli. It must be said that eating here is an absolute treat (James, at least, heavily recommends!), and the friendly atmosphere is just delightful. Other great local restaurants include Salt, just a few doors down from our own showroom, and the great Shepherd Neame pubs, like the Shakespeare and Bishops Finger.

Moving on, there is endless amounts to do in Canterbury. It is easy to get lost in the beauty of the town itself, and nothing compares to Westgate or Dane John Gardens in the sunshine. The Cathedral is an obvious highlight, but there is so much more to be seen. The wacky Catching Lives Bookshop, a small, crooked, charity bookshop right next to our showroom, is a good marker of Canterbury's unique history, whilst the Gublenkian, on UKC Campus, is holding a number of musical events this week before students return home for term.

Lastly, one can never forget that Canterbury is just one place. Whistable and Herne Bay are but a short drive, to mention just a few. Should you wish to see the sea, you're only one bus away, and in the summer, it is such a treat. Whitstable perfectly encompasses the English seasisde, with beautiful restaurants, shop fronts and a darling beach. The least we can do is guarantee that there will always be something to do in and around Canterbury, and we hope you make the most of it!
