The Hartley-Wintney Kitchen, Pantry and Utility
The Design
Set within its local landscape, this project is a reminder that contemporary design doesn’t have to shout to make its presence felt.
This home was actually built from the ground up. From the outset, the brief was clear: a modern house that felt considered, calm, and rooted in its surroundings. As the client puts it, “I wanted to build a beautiful contemporary home, and the team worked really well together to create a design that is both completely modern and also blends in well with the local environment.”
That sense of balance became especially important in the kitchen.
Rather than leaning into the sharper edges often associated with new-build homes, the client was drawn to something warmer and more tactile. “I wanted a kitchen that was warm and welcoming,” they explain, “so we went with a traditional, simple design with plenty of natural materials on show.” It was important that the space felt inviting and lived-in from day one. “I did not want the stainless-steel ‘operating theatre’ look that seems popular in modern houses.”
At the heart of the kitchen is a generous central island, designed to work hard without dominating the room. It’s a practical anchor point, but also a social one. “The huge central island is really useful as both a work surface and also a meeting point for family,” the client says.
The shift in how the space is used has been significant. Moving from a 300-year-old cottage to a contemporary, all-electric kitchen has been something of a learning curve. “My previous kitchen was in a 300 year old cottage with an Aga, so this is a completely new experience for me!” they reflect. “Using all-electric appliances is a learning experience…”
Choosing Herringbone was rooted in a desire for craftsmanship and control over the details. “I wanted to use a company with an in-house joinery, so that the whole kitchen could be custom made to our requirements,” the client explains. After a recommendation and a visit to both the showroom and workshop, that decision was confirmed. “I was impressed with the quality and workmanship.”
Seeing where the kitchen was made mattered. “Yes, I did [visit the workshop],” they add. “I was made welcome and I was impressed with the workmanship.”
The Details: Colours, Handles & Bespoke Details
The client chose a Herringbone Paints paint colours, boot room blue, canteen blue and coop pink. They used a natural lacquered oak, which work perfectly together! The handles are beautiful in Satin Nickel from Armac Martin. We use Dekton Daze Onirika worktop in the kitchen and F&P appliances.
“It's just a lovely place to be, it functions well and looks beautiful.”
The result is a kitchen that feels quietly confident, modern but warm, tailored but relaxed, and a space that supports everyday family life while sitting comfortably within a thoughtfully designed contemporary home. We wish the client a lifetime of happy memories in their new home.
