The Chingford Project
The Design
Building a home from scratch is an exciting opportunity to make everything perfect just for you. For our client, the kitchen was always going to be the centrepiece of their new home.
“We built our home from scratch,” our client told us. Taking on the role of project managers themselves, they carefully selected each supplier involved in the build. “It was really important to us to use suppliers we trusted.”
Beyond the finished kitchen, it was the process that stood out most. “David had great ideas and I really valued the amount of time that he spent working with me to create the kitchen design,” Roisin says.
The result is a kitchen that feels deeply personal. Thoughtfully designed, beautifully crafted, and built to support family life for years to come.
Our client came into the kitchen design process with a strong sense of what she wanted, having thoughtfully considered every element of the build.
“I poured over every decision with this build in all honesty, big and small,” she explains. By the time she began working with us, that preparation meant the design process felt focused and collaborative. “I had a good idea of what I wanted for the kitchen so when it came to working with Herringbone the actual design part was quite simple.”
The design was shaped around both aesthetics and real family life, ensuring the space would function effortlessly day to day while still feeling refined and timeless.
One of the most considered decisions was the choice of worktop, a defining feature visually, but also one that needed to withstand everyday family use.
“I think the trickiest decision for me was probably choosing the countertop material. It’s such a big part of the kitchen both visually but in everyday life.” With young children in mind, practicality was just as important as beauty. “I wanted to make sure I picked something that was both aesthetically pleasing but also practical (especially with small messy children!).”
Initially drawn to marble, our client ultimately chose porcelain after exploring options with David. “Before coming to Herringbone I didn’t even know this was an option,” she says. “I really valued the input from David in helping me with this.” It’s a decision she’s delighted with, one that offers durability without compromising on elegance.
“It's just a lovely place to be, it functions well and looks beautiful.”
With the house starting as a blank canvas, the kitchen played a key role in shaping how the family now uses and experiences their home.
“We are so pleased with the way we are able to live and use the space.” The result is a kitchen that supports busy family life while remaining calm, organised and welcoming.
Choosing Herringbone House Design was rooted in a shared appreciation for craftsmanship and bespoke design. “I loved that everything was handmade for our kitchen. There was no standard sizing that you had to work to.” The flexibility of fully bespoke cabinetry allowed the kitchen to be designed entirely around the space, not the other way around.
A visit to the Herringbone studio in Canterbury confirmed their decision. “The internal finish on the cabinetry was one of the deal clinchers for us.”
We wish the family a lifetime of happiness in their new home!
