Who doesn’t like a perfectly bespoke wardrobe whether it is a walk-in space or a fitted wardrobe?! Here at Herringbone we love designing, making and fitting them for our clients.

We provide bespoke wardrobes, which can be fitted in any colour, style and size with bespoke inside storage that fits your needs and wants. They are all made in our workshop in Canterbury Kent, using traditional techniques and modern machinery. Contact us or visit our showroom to find out more about our design process or for inquiries.

We love designing furniture and wardrobes for our client’s bedrooms and making them bespoke to them. This means that we ensure that the hanging space is just right, that the shelves are the right depth and size and that the open shelves are there is needed. We love working with different materials, colours and shapes to make them sing when the wardrobes are open as well as closed.

Whether your space is big or small, wide or narrow, a fitted wardrobe or a walk-in wardrobe can be made bespoke to your needs. When designing your space also think about what handles, mirrors, carpets, tiles, rugs and other personal touches that can be incorporated in your interior design. In this way you can personalise it even more from the off set and come out with a results that shows your personality.

Here are some examples of the wardrobes we’ve designed, made and fitted recently.

Kitchen Tips: Open Plan Kitchens; Are They For You?

When starting to think of your kitchen design and looking to begin the process, especially if you’re extending, the thought of a great big open plan kitchen with doors leading to the garden surely will have crossed your mind. Whether it be kitchen / dining, kitchen / living or all three if the space accommodates, here’s some things to consider if you’re unsure this layout works for you.

  1. A Relaxed & Social Butterfly

With your dining and/or living space flowing straight into your kitchen, will automatically make it a more social environment in a very easy-going way. Families will natural gather in the living, dining and kitchen areas even if taking part in solo activities like reading, watching TV, colouring in, doing homework, cooking etc. This creates a lovely feeling of togetherness but with some personal space. If however, your family value privacy and less noise travelling, perhaps keeping the living space separate might be better suited for your lifestyle.

Or, if your space allows for it, creating a separate, cosy living nook!

2. Plenty Of Room, Plenty Of Light

With an open plan layout, you will of course be left with a larger room. This will also make your kitchen itself appear larger and especially if you’re extending and adding windows, skylights will allow more natural light in bringing the outside in. Extending into an open plan living layout will especially make a grand impression if you have high ceilings.

3. The Heart Of The Party

Are you an entertainer? Always the host? There’s no better way to throw a saoiree, be it small or large, than with an open kitchen and living space. Maintaining presence while finishing up food or making drinks ensuring you don’t miss a beat of your get together. Plus, a sofa or arm chair is the perfect spot to end up in after a few drinks!

Keep in mind that if as Toastmistress, you like to keep the mess that comes with a party or dinner more of a mystery to your guests, perhaps opt for a separate dining space or even a sink in your utility near by as a place to hide away dirty plates and glasses until your guests have said their fare-thee-wells.

Kitchen Trends: Light Kitchens, Utilities & Dressing Rooms

Amongst the dark greens and blues, we have also done quite a few projects in white, grey and creamy neutral colour schemes. A neutral coloured run of cabinetry can allow you to be more daring with colour and texture in your accessories or perhaps a contrasting colour on your island or peninsula, or it can create a calm & minimal aesthetic in the space.

It can be daunting choosing colours, especially when you are choosing a white or grey, as there are so many hues, tones and undertones to each white, grey or cream! We have compiled a list of some of our neutral coloured projects to hopefully help you along the way.

Cornforth White

A cool toned, off-white, almost grey white. This looks beautiful paired with blues, greens and other cool toned colours. The satin nickel plated cup pulls and bun knobs tie in beautifully with this colour and the warmer tone in the nickel creates balance.

Sloan Square - Mylands

Closer to a true white, but still leaning in the “off whites” section. This white is a perfect neutral; meaning cool and warm tones alike will compliment it beautifully. In this bespoke kitchen & office space, the client went for a contrasting black island and silver range (cool tones) next to warm, brass handles, tap and orange chairs for the floating desk.

Grouse - Mylands

Grouse is a warmer, slightly pink hued neutral. Warm toned colours will look beautiful next to it like the beautiful burnished brass handles, tap and oak details in this dreamy bespoke utility room.

Pure White No.1 - Mylands

Pure White No.1 is exactly what it says on the tin. You cannot get whiter than this! Pure White No.1 will go with absolutely anything as it is fundamentally, the absence of colour. It is the perfect contrast here to the black Lacanche, granite splashback and black marble in the checkerboard floor.

Temple Bar - Mylands

Whites closer to creams are quite flexible. The yellow undertones pair nicely with exposed wood, terracotta or burgundy and golden brass accessories, while the neutrality still maintains it as an excellent partner to nickel & stainless steel, greens, blues & purples.

Guide to Dark Kitchens: Concerns & What to Consider

One common concern we hear from our clients is regarding dark cabinetry colours. Set the scene: You’ve spent weeks gazing at the paint swatches in adoration, you keep going back to that one colour (or, more than likely, two) Bond Street, Borough Market, or maybe even Sinner. The main concern: “Will it make my kitchen feel really dark and small?”

It’s understandable that you might find a dark colour daunting. While a dark kitchen won’t work for everyone, it’s less scary than you might think. If you are worried about the space looking too dark, here are a few considerations to make:

Choose a light worktop, wall and floor colour-

When choosing a darker hue for your cabinetry, if you want to keep the space feeling airy and bright, choose a lighter colour for the worktops, walls and floor. A lighter worktop and walls will reflect light in the space and create a beautiful contrast with your cabinetry. Your cabinetry design will really stand out with this contrast, so make sure you are in love with the design.

Choose a light or contrasting tile-

Another way to create balance in your kitchen is by introducing a contrasting tile for your splashback. You could run the tiles all around your walls between the upper and lower cabinetry to carry out the balance. We have some of our favourite decorative tiles available to purchase from the Herringbone Pantry.

Think about light-

Consider the windows in your kitchen and which direction they facing. If you are having an extension, this should be a consideration that is made early in the planning stages and gives you the freedom to make it work with your kitchen design. Depending on the amount of natural light flowing into your kitchen, your dark cabintery will vary in darkness and tone. Paint a sample board with your colour and see how the light will change the colour at different times of the day and in different parts of the room. Don’t be disheartened if you don’t have lots of big windows, there are other ways to introduce light into the space with pendant lighting, under unit lighting and spotlights.

Play with handles-

The style and finish of your cabinetry handles will impact the aesthetic of your kitchen. Aside from making a difference in the overall style of the cabinetry, juxtaposing dark cabinets with a brass, nickel or chrome handle will create contrast and reflect more light into the room.

Embrace the dark-

If darker tones is right up your street, why not go all out and embrace the moody & cosy feeling that comes with darker colours. Paint your walls with the same or a contrasting dark colour. For an even grander effect, take the colour all the way up your ceiling.

Do you love it?-

The most important thing to consider is ultimately, are you in love with the colour? Do not worry what your aunts, neighbours or colleagues have to say about it, if the colour best reflects your family personality than it will always work for you. Does it create the mood that you want bring to the space? You will spend a lot of time in your kitchen, so think about what colour will make you feel happiest.
