The Willesden Green Kitchen
The Backstory
When Anna & Andrew decided to take on their kitchen renovation project, they knew a bespoke kitchen was needed to maximise space with a layout that would work within their existing ‘wonky’ as they claimed, Victorian structure of the house. Space was tight for the family of three so early on they decided handle-less was the way to go to keep the space looking uncluttered.
“Flat fronted looked very clinical in the space and so shaker style worked best. Once we knew we wanted this and not flat fronted it was easy to choose our kitchen.”
“We found living in the house for a few years meant we knew how we used the space and how the light worked, which meant we designed a space that worked for our family and that feels amazing when you are in it. Research! Great design can be beautiful and practical, you don’t have to follow trends, you have to find what works for you. We would say really think about the details, the location of our bin, sink, dishwasher and cutlery and crockery drawers work perfectly for filling and emptying the dishwasher, making those dull tasks that little bit easier every day.”
The Design
This kitchen project includes a run of cabinetry featuring a mixture of wall, floor and tall units, and an island running parallel in a contrasting colour with cabinets in our Applegate range. The Applegate (named after the first clients to choose this style) is a modern take on the traditional shaker style. With units flush to the floor, cut-out handles and flat cut-out drawers, this design certainly has a more 21st century feel to it.
The Details: Colours, Worktops & More
For their colours, Anna and Andrew chose a combination of an off white, almost light grey for their main run and a pure black for the island.
“We have a pretty simple colour palette in the house and so we knew we wanted the island to match the dark blue black we have elsewhere, including our wooden sash windows. Choosing the ‘white’ for the wall run was harder but as we are south facing we feel comfortable that it wouldn’t look too cold.”
The beautiful polished worktops are a CRL quartz in the colour ‘Verona’. The inside of all the family’s cabinetry, is a gorgeous oak finish, complete with both loop & socket as well as ZZ traditional shelving.
A fantastically unique element to this project, was the long window behind the sink. Bringing the outside in along with plenty more light, this design choice may look small but is a very impactful one!
