The Backstory

We recently completed this stunning kitchen and bookcase for a family near Grangewood Park in London! This project was so much fun to work on, from design to craft and install, it is bursting with personality and style.

“We moved into our home about four and half years ago. We left the kitchen to last as we knew that we wanted to invest in it to make the most of the space. Initially we considered an extension but realised a refurbishment/replacement of the existing kitchen would give us what we need.”

The Design

This bespoke kitchen features two parallel runs of bottom units as well as two tall units book-casing one side. Our clients, Mark & Ranjit, chose their cabinetry in our Westminster range. The Westminster is probably our most traditional shaker style cabinet with the classic front panel and no additional decorative cock-beading around the door frame.

“We like to host friends and family so we needed a kitchen that was practical - lots of storage, lots of working space - but was also well designed and well made. This is why we decided to go bespoke. We knew roughly what colour, design etc. we wanted but working with Herringbone Kitchens ensured we got the most out of our new kitchen. In addition to the kitchen we also commissioned a new bookcase the length of one wall in our dining room. This really changed the feel of the room and we love the finished look.”

The Details: Colours, Hardware, Worktops & More

For their colour palette, our client chose a classic combination of deep navy blue on their cabinetry, white quartz worktops and burnished brass handles. The worktops are a Ceasarstone quartz in the colour ‘Statuario Maximus’ and feature a polished finish.

The inside of all the bespoke cabinetry is made of a gorgeous solid oak and features details like the long cutlery drawer and traditional zig-zag shelving inside the kitchen’s pantry / larder unit.

A cold shelf, in the same quartz as the rest of the kitchen worktops, was placed in the larder and is a great choice for practicality, with oils, coffee and breadcrumbs being really easy to wipe up. The stone was also taken up the wall as a splashback for the countertop gas hob. A burnished brass rail, matching the cabinetry handles, sits over the stove top perfect for quickly hanging utensils when in and out of use.

One of the most frequently asked questions we get is ‘Can I mix metals? Will my stainless steel tap look weird with brass handles?’ The answer to this is yes you can and no it won’t! You will always have stainless steel in your appliances, ovens, fridges etc. and we promise you will never notice the handles being different! Almost every kitchen we have designed has a mixture of metals, did you notice?

The Reeded Glass Doored Bar Unit

A fun (and beautiful) addition to the kitchen is the bespoke bar unit. With reeded glass, bifold doors, four shelves and three cupboards underneath, (one of which being a wine rack inside!) this unit seems to be the perfect piece to fit into the alcove at the end of the kitchen. Plus, with the garden doors right next to it, it’s the perfect spot for easy access of drinks during a garden cocktail party!

The Bookcase

Probably one of the most striking aspects of the project is the floor to ceiling bookcase in Mark & Ranjit’s dining room. Made up of four sections, each unit contains pin & loop shelving making it quick and easy to adjust the shelf height depending on your books, nic nacs or in our client’s case, the most glorious statue of a Hindu deity! Painted in a gorgeous green-blue colour matching the dining room walls, this pop of colour, accompanied by the array of books certainly brings a lot of character into this space!

On Using Herringbone

“The experience has been great and we have a kitchen that we are really pleased with. For the first design consultation we decided to visit the Herringbone Kitchens’ studio in Canterbury as actually seeing the cupboard styles, different door handles, worktop options etc. really helped at that initial stage.

We had a clear view what we wanted the kitchen to look like but walking through our thoughts with our designer Rob led to some tweaks and really useful suggestions. The designs were signed off after a couple more Zoom calls and the dates for installation booked in the diary.”
