The Crouch End Project
“I’d first seen one of Herringbone’s kitchens in a friends’ house and loved it, which inspired me to check out their website. Following their Instagram feed I could see the craftwork that goes into making the kitchens. Once we had our initial consultation in the studio and committed to go with Herringbone, everything went into acceleration as we needed the kitchen within a few months. The decision in the end came down to the quality and bespoke offering provided by the team.“
The Design
This bright kitchen is our Westminster Style, a modern take on the shaker kitchen. The one-wall kitchen (also known as an I-shaped kitchen) is fitted along the main wall in this space with floor to ceiling cabinet units on either side of the lower run of cabinets where the kitchen sink sits. The large island holds a lot of storage and offers seating as a social space at any time of the day.
The Details: Colours, Hardware, Worktops Etc
The kitchen units are a mix of cabinets and drawers to allow for as much storage as possible. The drawers on the island are deep to safely and easily store away plates and bowls whilst the cabinets are all hung with polished brass hinges to fit into the rest of the design.
The seamless sink makes it easy to prep, wash up and clean and the upper reeded glass cabinets just above the sink open up the space and zones in on this part of the kitchen. The cabinets are painted in Herringbone Paints’ Cathedral Stone whilst the large kitchen island is painted in Drum Belt Red from the same range.
“We had a good idea of what we wanted, in terms of functionality, but we went back and forth on the colour. Along with the expert eye of Katie from Borgnis Studio, what helped us finalise our choice was the big colour samples blocks from Rob, which gave us a great sense of what it would look like in the space. We absolutely love the combination we settled on.”
The Bora hob on the kitchen island works well in this space to make the practicality of using the kitchen on a daily basis easy. The island also holds a wine fridge and the family’s large collection of cookbooks.
The kitchen breakfast bar or “appliance garage” has pocket doors to allow for daily use and the shelves are at different heights to allow for appliances and different height goods to be safely stored. The granite worktop which is fitted throughout the kitchen continues on the cold shelf of this unit, making it easy to clean whilst being aesthetically pleasing.
“One of my favourite things is the enormous cutlery drawer, it’s so organised and I love it. My husband’s favourite is the “gadget garage”, the pocket doors are something he had been looking for from the beginning. The continuation of the worktop into this cupboard makes it practical but also feel a bit special.”
